Suppose the operating stress of the pinion is "Sp" and that of gear is "Sg".
You also know the number of teeth on each of gear and pinion and also the pressure angle.
Then calculate the Lewis form factors "Yp" for pinion and "Yg" for gear.
Then select the gear and pinion material in such a way that |Sp*Yp - Sg*Yg| = small (of the order of 0.5 to 1 MPa).

If you select such materials for gear and pinion then the design of the assembly will not fail in endurance i.e. the dynamic load given by Buckingham equation can be successfully withstood.

Gear material is selected on the basis of application of gear i.e. whether it is used for transpotation of heavy load or light load.what is power input,speed and torque condition. different -2 material are used like plastics, alloy steel etc. for different-2 p[urpose.
