There is no soul sleep of the righteous.
The moment we die, we face the judgment of God (Hebrews 9:27).
The bible clearly states:
2Co 5:8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. (ESV Translation)
Until the time of the final resurrection at the Second Coming, there is a temporary Heaven, “Paradise”, (Luke 23:43; 2 Corinthians 12:4) and Hell, “Hades”, (Revelation 1:18; 20:13-14).
Those that are damned will ultimately join Satan in their eternal separation from God in Hell.
2Th 1:9 They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,
Those that have died in Christ now reside in heaven as spiritual beings. Since Christ, the second person of the Godhead, has always existed, the elect of God have been known to Him before Christ actually walked the earth. So anyone who has died since the world began exists in paradise or in Hades as described above.
Those who have died in Christ will not remain in heaven as a soul without a body. At God’s appointed time, there will be a final resurrection where the spirit will be unified with the resurrected body at the second coming of Christ at the final judgment. From Phil. 3:20-21, and 1 John 3:2, we know that our glorified bodies will be like that of Christ. We will not be deity like He is, but we will have the same qualities of His resurrection body. Our heavenly bodies will be our glorified earthly bodies. Christ’s body that died on the cross was the same one that was resurrected. His glorified body was able to travel through walls, appear suddenly, and ascend to heaven. From 1 Corinthians 15:39-40, 42b-43, we learn that our heavenly bodies will possess flesh that is of a different variety than our earthly ones. Our new bodies will be bodies of flesh, but as different from our earthly bodies as humans are from animals.
What about loved ones in the afterlife? Although Matthew 22:30 indicates that earthly relationships like marriage will not be the same in heaven - we will definitely recognize those we knew on earth.
The story of Lazarus and the rich man, in Luke 16:20, shows we will still retain our identity and relationships in heaven. The rich man still remembered his siblings - and Lazarus, whom he knew on earth.
In conclusion, like a seed, the body of the righteous will be sown or buried and then one day be raised up to life. It is buried in death, decay, weakness, and dishonor. When it is resurrected, it will be changed in every way. It is raised up imperishable, glorious, powerful, and spiritual. We will then have eternal, permanent, and perfected bodies.

It depends on what you mean by Heaven. When we die, we go to a place known as the Spirit World. We will wait there until after we are resurrected and judged--then we will actually go to the Heaven where God lives. In the spirit world, we are, obviously, just spirits--we are dead. However, after the resurrection we will be immortal and alive forever. So in God's celestial kingdom, we will be alive.

People in heaven are not exactly alive, rather waiting for the landing of a new body on earth inorder to walk out their own ascension to a higher realm. Heaven is not singular but is plural. Perhaps even those on Earth are not alive, walking as though they are alive and yet dead (asleep). Being on Earth or Heaven is not a matter of alive but awakened state of being or asleep. Everything on Earth is but Heaven, if you only knew.

They are alive. They are not in their physical body. We have no need for physical things.
Acts 22:16
And now why tarriest thou? Arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
Our sins are forgiven on earth and if we stay faithful they will continue to be forgive.
You are right about no sin in heaven,
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10-In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth NOT righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
With further study you will learn that a Christian can fall and sin as to be lost. We must remain faithful until death.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,
I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

They're dead in one sense but alive in another. They're dead in the sense that they have experience a physical death resulting in a disembodied existence. They're alive in the sense that they are conscious and haven't ceased to exist.

People dont really die when their physical bodies die. Their soul passes on to the other side.
Also, people dont go to hell or heaven before Judgement day.
They go to a resting place and await that day.
However, because death is a seperation from life as we know it, human souls cannot communicate with us except when God allows them to.
