If he has been approved for SSI, the monthly payments should continue, though someone may need to be appointed as his payee.
The back pay from SSI is usually referring to previous medical bills that were pending,if none were outstanding it will not be paid out.If you have proof of unpaid medical bills re-submit his application, by making an appt. at local Social Security Office and submit proof of bills with application.

If they truly "stopped his payment because he was not paying his bills", then they probably SUSPENDED his benefits until somebody is appointed his PAYEE.

To be selected as a payee, somebody will have to go to the nearest social security office, with valid ID, and apply to be his payee. That person can NOT have been convicted of a FELONY, can NOT have spent one year or more imprisoned, and it is best if that person has his/her own income. Social Security doesn't recognize power of attorney, so don't bother with that unless you have other reasons to do so.

All of that said, FIRST CONTACT SOCIAL SECURITY at the local office (best to go in-person with your cousin) and talk to them. It is best not to guess as to why the checks stopped, and to check with them before doing anything else. EVERY SITUATION IS UNIQUE.

The 800 number is 1-800-772-1213, but aside from sending a message to the local office, they probably won't really be able to help you.

Good luck, and it is very nice of you to help your cousin.

Oh yeah, that other answer that says they won't release back pay unless you have a medical bill is incorrect (see second link below in my sources).

Hi I am unsure but in the UK even if he has his own place they have to help someone that is not fit for work so I would say yes they should keep paying it. I would say it would work somewhat like it does here but I do know that its very hard to get this things in the USA. If he has an appointee that can handle all his money so that he does not get confused or missing bills that would also be a good thing.
