I know there is no official "miniature labrador retriever", but is anyone out there trying to breed smaller labs? I have a female black lab (both parents are registered labs) who is really small. She should be 40lbs MAX 45lbs when shes full grown. Shes 6 months old right now and about 34lbs. I am not sure if i want to breed her, but if someone is trying to breed small labs, she might be able to help. people always want smaller versions of large dogs.

just because my dog is much smaller than usual doesnt mean shes unhealthy. she has no health problems (so far). selecting smaller size dogs to breed is not irresponsible if the dogs are heathly. not everyone wants (or can have) a huge dog.

Breeding delibrately for smaller then standard dogs is IRRESPONSIBLE!!! Also your dog would need to be at least 2 years old and have had and passed genetic health testing before she could be used for breeding.

Be aware that dogs delibrately bred smaller/larger then what the breed standard calls for often have very serious health issues. I see undersized dogs all the time..purebred dogs that are DELIBRATELY bred smaller then the breed standard calls for are being bred IRRESPONSIBLY and ARE very PRONE to some very serious health issues..heart, liver, kidney, development issues, joint/muscle issues, etc. They also often have shorter life spans. If a breeder cares at all about their breed then they will breed the best, healthiest specimans of the breed..they will add back to the breed not take away years of hard work and dedication done by those who are dedicated to the advancement of the breed.

If you can't afford, don't have room for, etc a particular size of dog then DO NOT get that breed/mix!!!! Get a breed/mix more suitable for your lifestyle and finances!!

She is a little small, but not miniature. Most people who use labs for hunting, etc like their labs to be smaller. A 50 -60 lb dog is the right size for sitting in a boat or in a blind. And, a 45 lb lab would be awesome - easy to hide, fit in a boat/blind, etc. If you have puppies, train them to hunt!

I have heard of that but it would be cute. My Lab is 110 lbs and I adore him. He is perfect just the way he is.

Labradors have already ''shrunk'' from their original size.......do you realize that the original Labradors were around 100lbs? I wish they'd stop shrinking everything....
