I watched the Changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier. (In Washington D.C.) and it was really cool. I have a couple questions too.....

How do you get to be one of the guards?

What branch of milatary do you have to be in?

What job do you have to have to be able to do it in the milatary?

Can you be a girl and still be able to be one of the guards?

and for anyone who has done it before.......Was it cool to do, or was it boreing???

Just wondering

You apply to become one but less than 20% are chosen. It is based upon your ability to drill and your ability to perform your job.

Army: 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard)

Your job is Infantry except for the few women that became Guards.

Since 1959, 555 have been awarded the badge, 3 have been women.

First it is the Army, there called the Old Guard 3rd Infantry Battalion I think. Most of the soldiers are in the Infantry and are selected for this unit not assigned. About females I'm not 100% sure but I think maybe. I have never done it but a friend of mine has in the 80's and he loved it. Showed me a pic with him holding the door open and President Reagan coming out. Go to yahoo search and put in the Old Guard and look for the military website for them and that should have all your answers for you.

Terrific information regarding the Old Guard. Another group worth seeing is the Evening Parade at 8th and I Marine Barracks by the Silent Drill Team.

I went to see them both during a 9 month TAD to the East Coast... very impressive.
