He was contrasting that with people who pray out loud in public so people would see them and think highly of them. His whole point is that you should pray sincerely to God, and not to show off your spirituality to other people.

--PRAYER TO GOD SHOULD BE the most intimate thing an individual does, as a personal prayer!
--WHAT WE REVEAL to God is totally between us and he IN SEVERAL ways
1. Detail, 2. Emotion, Sincerety,
--WE MAY choose to tell our mate what we might have said to God , but there is no way we could duplicate that communication that we had on a 1 to 1 with Jehovah God
--But it is interesting that we do confide our prayes also to Jesus in that we pray to God in Jesus name and authority without praying directly to him1
ALSO prayer should never be for a self-righteous show!

A lot of false-Christian only pray in public to make it look good. He who prays in private really loves the Lord.
This was the case in that time, as it has been throughout time. The church rulers wanted to make it look good.

I think it is to prevent you from telling others that you will pray for them.
There is a certain prideful arrogance associated with telling someone that you will pray for them, that contradicts humility. It is often the last remark of a coward losing a debate. If you cannot win an argument, you just say I will pray for you.
See if you can spot this behavior in these forums.

I'd bet he meant exactly what he said - do not pray to god out in public but privately, in your room, with the door shut.

I agree with Philo, being a preacher I have to say people who pray in public, who put on a show, who pray in public or dance in the spirit are doing so to look and feel holy. God wants us to talk only to him and to listen to him in private, how can God communicate through someone who desires to look holy and full of God when in actuality they are full of themselves.

Not to flaunt your prayers for notice like the phrases did but pray from your heart and where people won't be noticing that you're even praying.

Christians don't have to have prayer rooms/rugs/walls to pray.. many times have I sat in a crowded room and prayed and no one ever knew but God and me.

It basically means you shouldn't be like hypocrites who say it loudly in the streets but don't use it in their lives. Prayer is special between you and God. I'm not saying don't pray with others just not make prayer look hypocritical.

. Many are called, and so forth. - This verse is wanting in considered one of Colbert’s MSS., marked 33 in Griesbach. Many are called by the preaching of the Gospel into the outward communion of the Church of Christ; yet few, particularly, are chosen to stay with God in glory, because of the fact they do no longer come to the grasp of the ceremonial dinner for a marriage garment - for that holiness with out which none can see the Lord. it is an allusion to the Roman custom of elevating their protection tension; all have been mustered, yet purely those have been chosen to serve, who have been got here across suitable. Reader! study thy soul, and make confident artwork for eternity! .
