Virises will usually be contained in attachments. If your internet provider doesn't scan your emails for you then save any attachments to your pc and scan them with your own virus scanner before you open them.

If you have a deceny anti virus it will aitomatically scan e-mail attachments. I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following link. http://www.computeractive.co.uk/ On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps.

As you are asking this question I can assume you don't have anti virus software (as most default setting for anti virus software is to scan your emails). I would recommend you install at least the free anti virus (like AVG). If you have lots of emails purchase a better anti virus package.

If you had Norton Internet Security you wouldn't have that problem E-mail scanning is included in the service.

You don't say what anti-virus software you are using, still !!
all you have to do is to open your anti-virus software and go to options or setup and enable the scan incoming mail option,, good luck.
