P stands for promotable. Since you did mentioned E-6(P),it means that this person was selected for E-7. When a promotion board convenes, and people are selected for promotion, they are given a sequence number. As their sequence number comes up, these people get promoted to the next rank. They might get promoted right away; let's say that their number is one of the lowest, 1,2, 3 or 4 and so forth or it might take them awhile if their number is high.. 255,256 and so forth. So, while waiting for their number, they are consider Promotable until their number comes up.

The information above collectively is correct, with some exceptions.
when the P is used on the enlisted side, for example on an E5 and below, it only denotes that the Soldiers has attended a promotion board and received a "GO" (Army) but it truly bears no additional authority, it simply means he is one step closer towards meeting another criteria required for promotion which is to meet or exceed the cutoff score for that soldiers MOS to actually be promoted. however a SSG or E6 (Army) which is "P" or promotable means he already attended/participated in the centralized promotion and was in fact selected for promotion in which the P means he is already approved for promotion but simply waiting in line to get pinned according to his sequence number which is derived by his seniority in comparison to all those who got approved within the same MOS. so a SSG/P may carry a bit of extra authority because in due time he or she will haunt you after you disrespected him while he was just a "SSG"

promotable. they've been selected for promotion, but their turn hasn't come arround yet.

SSG is an E-6 in the Army/Marines.
SSgt is an E-5 in the Air Force.

SSG (P) is an E-5 that will be an E-6.

It means be sure of what you are saying/doing. In other words, make sure you know what a p is and what a q is, cause they can look very similar if you are sloppy.
