Most people realize that oxygen is a by-product of photosynthesis. However, many mistakenly believe that the oxygen released comes from carbon dioxide ... that trees and other producers taken in carbon dioxide, keep the carbon, and get rid of the oxygen.

Actually, the oxygen released comes from splitting water molecules. I think that's one of the most interesting things about photosynthesis. The light-dependent reactions split H2O, keep the H+ and the electron from the hydrogen, and let the oxygen diffuse out.

It's photosynthesis, which is pretty amazing. It's not just trees, either, any green plant. Millions and millions of years ago there was a lot more oxygen in the air as the world was filled with plants. As the oxygen level dropped, the giant creatures that used lots of oxygen had to become smaller when the oxygen level dropped. So plants are very important to life on this planet.

In the presence of sunlight they perform photosynthesis to extract carbon from carbon dioxide in the air. The waste product from that process is oxygen. That is good news for us animals that can't make oxygen.
