You should still take him to rule out other problems... Just because he seems to be getting better doesn't mean the problem is gone or he is actually healing.. He might be getting used to it and adjusting himself so that it's not bothering him so much. Dogs are wonderful at hiding pain and illness.
If you find out for sure that the problem is gone, then massage and slow exercise is your best bet. But if he still has an injury and you don't find out, you could do more harm than good... and he might not get better next time w/o surgery.
Edit : You should not wrap or split the leg.. You do not know what is going on, so by wrapping or splinting you could cause the dog more problems than good... He needs to keep using it, good blood circulation is the key to healing. Don't let him over do it, keep him from running hard, jumping etc.
Don't give him anything for pain... He needs to feel that his leg hurts so he will be cautious and not over do it.. If you give him something for pain, then he'll feel great and then will definitely re-injure or make his current injury worse..

I wouldn't cancel the appointment, because how do you know it was a pulled muscle? Or even a muscle problem at all? It could be a joint problem, in which case it is likely to reoccur. If you have to wait this long to see your vet I definitely wouldn't cancel it - find out for sure what you're dealing with before you start thinking about treatment.

your dog needs anti inflammatories
do not take the dogs for walks, exercise minimum
no one to bother him/her just let it relax to keep the weight off. If you are really worried you can have an emergency app from the vet.
Bromelain is great for strains and inflamation. This is a natural substance and is better for the dog. You should look it up on the internet.

Just let him be, things sound OK as you say :) Time & rest should heal as well as the dog itself knowing as he feels better, you can give dogs baby aspirin ( NEVER CATS THO ), not sure his size but small dogs one baby aspirin & so on, just follow the instructions as to how often, if you can't get him to take the pill, hide it in peanut butter :) I would not wrap it tho, if things don't improve in a week or 2 or he gets worse, then I would take him to the vet !

Please don't cancel your appointment with the vet. It's very possible the injury is more serious and could lead to permanent impairment. In the meantime, give him lots of praise and attention.

Nearly everything will heal better if you dont let him be too active. Hopefully its not a torn ligent, tendon or uscle which will need surgery.

I agree with squirrly. My dog sprained her leg before. I took her to the vet they couldn't do anything. It is one of those things that has to heal on it's own.
