I know that we shouldn't just throw then together with the trash, and that some places like Lowe's will take batteries for recycling but not the common AA, AAA, 9V, etc batteries, so who takes them?

Places like Radio Shack & Wal-Mart will take the batteries & recycle them for you.
DO NOT throw them in the trash, please.

Hi, I just called Interstate Battery because I know that they recycle batteries and the answer that they gave me was this..."We recycle any rechargeable battery but regular alkaline batteries no longer contain mercury in them so they no longer need to be recycled." In other words the regular household batteries that you are talking about do not contain mercury in them any longer and therefore no longer need to be recycled, I guess.

I take my used household batteries, AA, AAA, D,C, etc. to 'The Source' on Sequin St. in Parry Sound. They will accept them for safe disposal. A great service that few people know about, so please pass along.
