I am trying to find a good, small-medium carry-on bag!

What do you use? What works for you?

I think am looking for these qualities:
- not heavy
- shoulder strap-friendly
- 1-2 exterior compartments for wallet, etc
- maybe a bit stiff so I can put my feet on top of it during long train/plane rides
- not padded or complicated (not taking my laptop)

It seems a lot of these bags today are heavy, bulky, wheeled, over-pocketed, padded for laptops or otherwise waaaayyyy too bulky for my needs. Bags have really changed!

Get a good leather duffel bag. That's what my husband used when we took a trip to Reno, and it was better than my wheeled bag.

I travel a lot and use a sturdy backpack as my hand carry for two reasons, they are inexpensive and they allow me to always have 2 hands free while not putting my back/hips out of whack while walking all over the airports.

If you're not the backpack type of person (such as my mom), I would suggest you get a duffel bag type of bag from someplace like Walmart. They normally aren't too complicated and they usually have a lot of selection to choose from.

Good luck finding something that works for you and happy travels!

I use a medium-weight sports bag, with end pockets.

If I'm checking luggage in, I use a 20-25 litre day-pack for the items that I want to have on the plane with me....and then use that when walking around wherever I'm visiting.

I've used duffel bags with adjustable straps so you can wear it across the shoulders. Large messenger bags might work for you also. They tend to come with more exterior compartments with easy access.

Leather is *way* too heavy in my opinion. You must look for light, especially if you're not buying a bag with wheels. LeSportsac http://www.lesportsac.com/ (parachute material) is practically weightless. That's what you need. Check out my packing page: http://www.thetravelzine.com/friend.htm

Happy travels!
