Looking to purchase either 98' or 99' v70 have heard there are some 99' v70 that were built with cable throttle, trying to confirm getting mixed info from both dealers and tech's. What would be the best buy for the two(2) years does the e-throttle problem arise again after software download, anyone have firsthand info. out there both vehicle are generally good I've heard, would like to step up from the 740 series I've owned (4) 86'-91' very reliable for me, but not cost effective to repair at this stage considering age of vehcle.

What year is your 740 and what is the mileage? It may be more efficient to keep that going as there are electrical problems with newer Volvo's., If you want to get into a newer wagon that has good reliability and safety try a Subaru Legacy or Outback.

Take the 98 over the 99.The computer system in the 99 is so messed up its not even funny.Shops that have the technology to work on the 99 and up computer systems can be hard to find. The 98 is a much easier car to maintain and is a bit less expensive to repair.
I must however warn you whatever you have been spending on your 700 series be prepared to at the very least double it for routine maintanance.I work on these cars daily and often without being a "croock" mechanic i write estimates all day for anywhere between $1000.00 and up to $6000.00 i kid you not.
Good luck

CLeant eh passges UNDER the IAC vavle, and also check your FLAME TRAP< whcih VOLVO uses INSTEAD of a PCV vavle. It is UNDER the intake manifold and collects CARBON and SLUDGE from oil as it decomposes. IT will DETRACT from idle mixture, and many times requires REPLACING< but other times requires a thorough cleaning up. The BEST plug for you will be either a BOSCH IRIDIUM or DENSO TWIN TIP or IRIDIUM Plugs, but ONLY once the IAC throttle body and FLAME TRAP are perfectly cleaned up. Consider REMOVING the thottle body all together for cleaning up, and use AMSOIL POWER FOAM or MERCURY POWER TUNE (boat store) to do this job. It is the BEST you will find and is the most complete! GOOD LUCK!! 98% of the time YOUR issue on a VOLOV is from the IAC vavle, CHECK ALL VACUUMS as well. There is a vacuum that runs parallel to the T body that usually clogs up with time. ALSO YOU MUST USE SPEICAL ENGIEN OIL IN THERE!!! only AMSOIL EUROPEAN< or MOBIL ONE0W-40 and a few others. NO VAVLONE EVER! It will RUIN your turbo charger easily with time as it decomposes while you drive. PWOER WASH your engine to make things BALANCED and CLEAN! Use CHLORINATED BRAKE CLEANER on your wiring harness to restore connctions to IAC connector and all other items. GOOD LUCK andf E-mail me back with your results!

after the repairs the e-throttle systems have been working as well as any other companys system. so either year will probably be ok in this respect. however these cars are still going for substancial money and for between 17-23k dollars, i think i could keep your 7 series car going for at least 30 years.
