None of these breeds are watch dogs, you have three hunting dogs, a sporting dog and a lap dog. If you want something that will bark when someone comes to the door, all will do that very well, expect PERHAPS the maltese. Any hunting breed will get alone with children, but are a higher risk of biting, just because they have SOOO much energy and rarely get it all out in city living. Because you live alone and the dog will be alone most all day, I would say no to the hunting breeds, Dashshund, Westie, Yorkie. These are very very very high energy dogs and are more likely to chew the place to bits or destroy something or have behaviour problems if left alone all day. Cockers are not as high energy as most other sporting dogs and are very very loyal to their families. Maltese do require a lot of work on the coat.
I'd go with The Cocker or the Maltese, depending on the time you have to exercise and groom the dog. Also, consider the background and personality of each animal, obviously. Age will determine a lot about energy requirements too, which I'm sure you know.
Good luck, and good for you for taking the time to make the best decision for you and your new family member!
Oh yes, and as for shedding, the best on the list is the Maltese. Because they have hair not fur, they shed as much as people do, and are fairly hypo-allergenic. It's just that when they shed you notice more. But if a man with short hair and a woman with long hair live together, it will always be the woman's hair you notice in the drain, because of the length.

Hi! Well, since you don't want one that sheds much, the Dachshund would be the best choice from that prospective.
I don't know about watchdogs, but from my experience, dogs do sense things well, and will protect you even if they aren't 'meant' to.
Cockers and Westies are a bit bigger but not too much.
As for potty training, I found out dachshund, yorkies and maltese are harder while Spaniels and Westies aren't that much of a challenge!
For gets along with people... hm... I read Cocker Spaniels are great, but other than that...
I really hope I helped, good luck with your choice! (And it's great that you're rescuing a dog, they are just as good - even better hehe xp) xxx

I don't know much about these breeds, but based on what you said you want in a dog I would suggest a Boston Terrier. They are extremely friendly, protective of owners, have short hair so they require very little grooming and do not shed alot. Also, there are many located on petfinder.com. As far as the ones you mentioned. I do know that Cocker Spaniels are a hard breed to potty train.

My friend has a short haired dachshund (he doesn't shead alot of hair, firendly and a good watch dog)
Westie's are great for companionship although they dog shed a fair bit of hair.
Cocker Spaniels are very exciteable and shed alot of hair.Probably be to playful to be a watchdog.
I'm not sure about a Maltese and yorkie's are great dogs too.
I think the dachshund would suit you best tho.Good luck

As far as the shedding issue goes, anyway, from that list you'd be best going for a smooth-coated Dachshund.
I've known several Dachshunds, and they've all been very even-tempered, if a little reserved with strangers at first. As to watchdogs...well, just about any dog will go bananas if someone's breaking in in the middle of the night!

well, all dogs except poodles shed 2x a year! so do humans. the westie spaniel maltese and yorkie all need regular grooming due to hair length.. i am assuming the dachsund is a shorthair!
as to getting along with people. YOU are responsible to make sure the pup is acclimatised to people. how many people he sees and how you react to strangers influences your dog. spaniels can have health issues. overweight is waaay common! epilepsy is not unusual either.
yorkshire terriers can be too defensive..but that again is the owner allowing that bad behaviour. maltese..well white dogs tend to have allergies and sunburn issues be careful in summer and be aware of grass itches!
all dogs are trainable to go outside..you will be the deciding factor in the attitude and behaviour of any dog you choose!
whats cute in a puppy can be not so cute when they grow up!
as to what suits you? well ,do you walk a lot, dont get the dachsund! hey they are nice dogs but its cruel to pick a short legged dog if you are walking long ways . do you have a yard? and good fences!
pick the dog that comes to you freely and is the most appealing to you personally be it colour ,expression, whatever!

Of the breeds you listed, I would probably choose the Westie. Most hard-coated breeds shed very little. The AKC describes their temperment as alert, gay, courageous and self-reliant, but friendly. Of course, dogs vary, even within specific breeds. Choose the one you most relate to and with whom you make that "love connection."
Congradulations on choosing to adopt rather than buying from a pet store or back-yard breeder. You have already made the best choice, now just find your new best friend and save his or her life.

Westies are great small dogs...my friend has one and absolutely loves it. He's very smart and was trained very quickly. Yorkies dachshunds and maltese dogs yip a lot and aren't really great protectors. I have a boxer, who is a PHENOMENAL watch dog, but they can get kind of big. God luck!

All but the Dachshund need to be groomed on a regular basis. The Cocker, Maltese & Yorkie need to be groomed about every month to two.
As far a guard dog none of them. Alert dogs yes. They will alert you to noise, knocks on the door etc.
The Dashshund will be hard to house break, they are notorise for this.
Now it is up to you to make your choice.

IF you are lookin out for a good watch dog, Westie should be the best... but if u want one that gets along well with people, LABRADOR (golden retriever) would be the best...! It sticks to its master like anythin n so affectionate to people in general..
