As the water is moving or flowing down the river its kinetic energy or energy due to motion is being used up. If the river has a water fall then its gravitational potential energy can be used. Gravitational potential energy is energy due to height. Eg. the waterfall is high up and the water uses this energy as it falls down the waterfall.
Rivers also have chemicals because of dissolved rocks and minerals, and sometimes the chemical concentration in the water can be so high that it ends up dissolving rocks already in the river, so this in some way can be the use of its chemical energy.
