Like you, I believe that God is spirit, which is sexless. However, 5,000 years ago, most societies were patriarchal, putting the emphasis on the male, so it was standard to refer to God as being male. Over the millienia, it became the habit. Really, I have no problem with referring to God has 'He'. God doesn't care, and it's rather more respectful than saying 'It'.
