my mate wears his on the right hand on the finger next to his smallest one,i said it should be on he left,on the finger next to his little finger.

Correct finger but wrong hand. It should be on the left hand.

In the UK & USA it is third finger, left hand by tradition, just like in the song.
That is the finger next to the little finger.
In many other countries the right hand is traditional, so it depends on your friend's nationality.
Edit - it really surprises me that so many people consider their own practice to the THE ONE and make no allowance at all for the traditions and practices of other cultures.

You're right - it's the finger traditionally used for both sexes. Your mate has the right finger - but the wrong hand. However, it can also be a matter of preference, or if he has an injury that prevents him wearing it on the normal finger.

My husband wore his engagement ring on his left hand (on the finger next to the smallest ) then replaced it with his wedding ring when we got married. The engagement ring was then removed to his right hand.
