Hi! I want to risk my future by going to film school in the US on the hope I'll get US citizenship, the film industry in my country is almost non-existant, I'm hoping if I do get American citizenship I can get jobs in Television, Documentaries or even films. But if I dont get citizenship I'll have ruined my life, no real careers in film in my country, so what does it take to get US citizenship? Is it too hard, almost impossible? I am not concidering marrying an American for the sake of a citizenship as an option, I have no relatives in the US, and if its about applying for a job and having my employer sponsor my greencard isn't there another option, like a solo option where I dont have to depend on a secondary party for getting citizenship? Please let me know if you have an idea

Not easy at all. First, are you already here and here legally? If yes, what kind of visa? If no, you have to find a sponsor to get here. Once you get here, you will have to live at least 10 years (maybe longer now). You have to show that while you are here, you are paying taxes every year. Then after all that, you have to pay application fees. Not sure how much but at least $500. Then you have to wait at least another year for them to process your application. (Faster if you have a lawyer, but very costly.) Then they will call you and test you on writing, reading, and speaking skills. After that, they will quiz you to see if you know anything about our history and government.
It's not as easy as you think. Go to http://www.uscis.gov/

Citizenship is only offered after you fill out all the other paperwork that goes with immigration qualification. First is the G-325 A, Biographic Information. Then the application to Register Permanent Resident or Adjust Status. Then the Petition for Alien Relative if married. You cannot forget the Application for Employment Authorization Affidavit of Support and any other forms necessary for the persons situation. It ain't no joke! I did it for my husband and it was a long drawn out process but well worth it. He has to keep his status for 1 year then he can go for citizenship. In some cases you can apply for dual citizenship. Good Luck!

Sorry to say it is not easy at all..........First of all which country do you come from, you need to investigate what ate the criteria necessary to leave you county, via work visa, school visa.... Second in majority of cases you need to have excellent records, school, past history (mean no criminal records), income.....You need to prove the united states that you can sustain yourself in the US......Third sometimes you need to find a sponsor Either in you native land or in the US that will help you out... Its much more complicated then what I have told you so far... I am just giving you an outline.. It is diff rent for every country.... Contact you local government and find out how to leave...then go to the US embassy and talk to individuals there to get a more detail report in how to become an American citizen.....By the way I have know people that have permanent residences that took them almost 5 -10 years to receive....

Find a way to cross the border (not difficult) before November of next year because after the elections President Bush will give amnesty to almost all the illegal aliens between then and January's inauguration ceremonies.
It probably is more difficult to get into the film industry. A very highly competitive industry. It would probably help to be a cornholer

To apply, it's rather easy. But you have to wait a while for the case to even be seen. I got an update of where the government is with the cases at an immigration office and so far, they're at year 2002. They're about 5 years behind. It's faster to get a work permit and work for a while. If it expires, and the government decides to open your case and take it to court, they can get a deportation warrent and deport you to your native country. I know this since I was with my mother when she tried to apply for her citizenship since her work permit expires soon.

I don't advice you to go to any US embassy and tell them you want to become an american citizen, because they will not help you.American Embassy is there to help american citizens. Do you actually think that they will grant you a visa,if they knew that your plan was to stay in the country forever.
If you have money, just enrol for any university in USA and once in the country, you can look at your options.
Good luck.
