Seems the Catholic priesthood has a significant problem in this area, such that they hold conferences on the topic. There are a high number of adult children of alcoholics who enter the priesthood as well. Some evangelical denominations see using alcohol and drugs as almost the unforgivable sin, so lots of those pastors don't drink or approve of any who do. But I know more than one Word of Faith preacher who, like Casey Treat (Casey Treat Ministries), admits he once peddled drugs (before he found out there was more money and no jail time in peddling Jesus).

Alcohol is a potentially addictive drug of course, so it's use can become habitual either through addiction or simply become a behavior patter linked to social habits, and for some it is an escape from reality, though for such folks it usually becomes a passage to a worse reality than they are escaping.

I prefer Pepsi One.

Why pick on ministers as opposed to politicians?
Drinking is a means of relaxing which if done moderately is not harmful.
It is when people begin to drink to excess to escape reality that it becomes a merry go round. The more they drink the worse things become and the worse things become the more they drink. They soon become chemically dependent on alcohol and can't function without it.
There are many theories about alcoholism. Some of them say it is hereditary, or a genetic trait that makes certain people more likely to be alcoholics. Some say it is a disease. I think everyone agrees that unless a person wants to stop drinking it is almost impossible to stop them if there is any source of alcohol available.

Jenny...I am sure that some ministers do develop drinking problems or become ministers after they have stopped drinking. As you have said it covers all spectrums of society. Ministers are just people like everyone else...we tend to hold them to a higher standard than we do ourselves...not really fair at all.

Only the ones who get caught diddling people they're not married to or diddling underage boys.
Then they emerge, miraculously healed in less time than it takes most of them to write a sermon about it.
