conventional wisdom says a 12 is always better for turkey, with the tightest choke you've got, to get the most shot into the relatively small space of the birds' head and neck.
That said, you really need to pattern both guns to find out which will get that elusive "Most pellets into the bird", and ask yourself seriously which you're more comfortable shooting - if that 12 with a big magnum shell is gonna make you flinch and miss your shot because you're dreading the recoil, then it's the wrong gun. Likewise, if the 20 has the better pattern but you just aren't confident in it, you'll never take the shot and you'll lose your bird.
Pattern them both - with your turkey load and your turkey choke, at a reasonable range (distance to target, not shooting facility), and then make an objective decision based on your actual results.
Good Luck.

1: A 20 guage has a smaller barrel, but with a choke on a 12 gauge, they are baout equal, therefore equal in a curacy. 2: I wouldn't ever hunt a deer with a 20 gauge 3: A 20 gauge has way less. It is hard to describe the recoil of shotguns, they are different than rifles. 4: For upland game, I would go for 20 gauge. 5: For anything else, you can beat the 12 gauge.

Like you I own both when I go hunting I usually grab the 20GA it's a little lighter at the same time the recoil isn't as bad so if I need to fire a second shot I can. I hear all the time people saying you have to use a 12GA on turkey. Go hunting try them both see which one you like better and use that one.

Both will do the job and both are good guns.My personal pick would be the 870. This gun just fits well and handles very easy.870s are hard to beat.

Both guns have their own pluses. the 20 would weigh less carrying it in the feild.... the 12 would have better range. Let the shooting range and paper make your choice. from 20-35 yrds. the most pellets in the kill zone would be the winner.

There is no way to answer it by personal preference you have to go on which gun shoots the best pattern at 40 yds.
