Do you mean on the winning side or both sides? Civilian or military?
The Gulf war was won with minimum coalition casualties, less then 500 dead.
The Falklands war had less then 400 British killed.
The Six Day War had less then 1000 Israeli deaths.
By modern standards the Iraq war has a very low casualty rate when compared to other wars with coalition deaths being around 3500 and Iraqi Military casualties being about 6500 after 4 years.
As to the competence point, we (the US) have the best trained, led and equipped troops in the world. No one can stand against us as long as we have the will to victory. As for wisdom, we also have the one of the few militaries in the world that takes great pains to avoid civilian casualties.

Napoleon's campaign into Russia was marked with serious fighting. The Battle for Borodino was actually the single bloodiest battle in history.
European introduction of smallpox and other epidemics into the New World was not a deliberate campaign, excluding several known incidents.
By modern example, how modern do you mean? The Cuban Missile Crisis is a good example, if you consider that an actual "battle". Modern day, you won't find any combatants engaging in outright surrender without casualties on either side, not for an entire battle. You'll find mass surrender of units for conflicts as recent as OIF in 2003, but not for entire battles, and never for entire wars.

the nuclear war that DIDN'T take place with our decades long, cold war rival the soviet union.
we talked and talked and talked to our most deadly rivals.
we never needed to illegally wire tap anyone.
no one was put into detention camps for years without being charged or given access to lawyers.
we didn't fight or lose our heads (which is all our president seems capable of) and we won in the end.

Reference the Cuban Missile Crisis.
It took strength and wisdom on both sides to end that conflict before it started.
