Well, I would love to sit here and say yes, we can solve this problem, but unfortunetely, reality tells me different. There are way too many young people out there who think they are invinsible, they can do and get away with anything. Unfortuntely, they are not, and neither is the family of six they just ran into head on.
I once lived in a place where drinking and driving was considered "normal". I was even told at one point that if I wanted to "fit in" I needed to drink and drive. That is plain rubbish. People please, call and cab, and pull over and sleep if you are tired! Be responsible adults.

whydoesapenguin, You're kinda behind the times there, sport.
Truckdrivers don't do the pills anymore. There are federal regulations on substance testing required of any carrier. You get caught, your license is gone! Which brings an excellent point to bear! If they subjected John Doe motorist to the same standards as the truck drivers, alot of this Fatigue, and Drunk Driving would stop. Young people cause alot of accidents due to lack of experience, and overdriving thier vehicles. The spectrum of DD covers all age groups to within a few points. Fatigued drivers less. How would you like to get a 1,000 dollar ticket because some copper thinks you're "Fatigued"? (But you can't park that thing here, the neighbors will complain!) Inconsideration causes more accidents than DD, and fatigue combined. To solve problems with younger drivers 17-21, make parents really responsable for jr.'s actions. Vehicle seizure, loss of license for at least a year (1rst offense), Damages, and court costs. Until we make people really understand potential consequences of thier actions, nothing will change. If your thoughtlessness takes the life of another through drunk driving, you should be put on a chain gang picking up trash on the highway for the rest of your life! If you have the paitience to read accident reports, try the NTSB web site. They've got it all, Jumbo jets down to skateboards.

Fatigue probably kills more people than drunks do but the drunks get the publicity and the funding.
Driving while drunk is an easily measurable quantity and attaching it to a statistic is also easy.
Driving tired is a bit more ephemeral , it is almost impossible to measure and usually gets written up in accident reports as" lost control of the vehicle" w/o an explanation of exactly how that all happened.
Solving the problem is actually easy; Make a concerted effort to make suburban living extinct. If you live in a big city like NYC or Chicago and you use subways, drunk driving is a non-issue

I suppose eventually technology will conquer the problem. But it will take some years for this to become a reality. Until the mean time, just learn to pull over and get a nap if you are tired and don't drive while you have been drinking or smoking. Have a buddy who can drive you home. good luck

Yup, I think if you wanna drink you should have a ride home. A person who has not been drinking.
If your tired maybe you shouldnt drive at all or get a ride. We may never solve this problem, cause people think they are capable of doing these things when they are not and dont use there heads .

Yes, eventually they will all kill themselves in road accidents or grow out of it! Or they will kill so many of the rest of us, no-body will be left to complain. Gosh, I've become cynical lately!
