Bananas do not rot in the fridge their skins just turn black but the fruit is perfectly fine to eat or use in banana bread. Refrigeration will slow down the ripening process.

There is a chemical reaction which causes the peel to blacken. the fruit inside also softens. It is still edible.
You can even freeze bananas. The skin will be blackened and the fruit soft. Refridgerated bananas make a great banana loaf.

Bananas will "gas" themselves in the fridge like they will in a bag & over ripen too quickly & turn black. You can however wrap them in wax paper(peeled) & place in Ziploc bag & eat or cook with later. They actually taste really good frozen- like ice cream- & work really well in banana bread or banana pancakes.

Bananas are not used to cold. They brown with spots and turn eventually black. They start out green and turn yellow at maturity. After that, it is all downhill.Unfortunately, cold increases the decay factor faster than just leaving them out on a shelf.

Even when they are taken off the tree, they still need oxygen so they don't rot. If they are in the fridge, they can't get the oxygen they need. So, they begin to rot away.
