Westboro are for real.
A recent Louis Theroux documentary on them "The most hated family in America" was frightening. An object lesson that faith and sincerity alone is not enough.

For satire, you need the Landover Baptist Church, or The Brick Testament, (the best bits of the bible in Lego).

They're not that different from Pat Robertson, who (with Jerry Falwell) immediately blamed 9/11 on America.

Phelps and that "Nuremberg Files" wacko are just the end of what is a pretty continuous spectrum of religious hate groups.

Unfortunately, they're 100% serious. They have been around for a long time and if it was just a joke they wouldn't show up at people's funerals to thank god for the deaths of the innocent. Not to mention they thank god for 9/11, hurricane Katrina, etc.

They're sick and twisted. They pervert their own beliefs in their actions. Seems like they forgot the "judge not lest you be judged" part of their bibles. Oh, right, they're Baptists. I don't think they read their bibles; they just use them to harass people, and in the case of Westboro, to whack people at cemeteries. That's pretty pathetic and not very "Christian".

They are real, and to think God is in them protesting our soldiers funerals is sick.We had a soldier here come home to be buried and they said they were coming. We had bikers and college kids and about the whole town put up a block between them and the funeral bu they didn't show up.I know they knew the fight would be on and I mean in the name of the Lord. They like to put fear in people and my bible tells me that GOD IS LOVE.

They are for real.

1- They were regularly protesting at funerals of US servicemen that were killed in Iraq. No one would be that tasteless for comedy
2- The regularly appear on news shows like Hannity and Combs.

What I'd like to know is why the most hateful group of any particular religion is the most vocal.

And why, in this case, other Christian leaders haven't denounced them.

It would be hilarious if it was, but they are 100% serious. I've seen interviews with Fred Phelps and he totally believes what he's saying. What a dumbass.

They are for real.

I know, I wanted to think it was some bizarro performance art thing myself, but unfortunately they are really that far gone.
