Strange question i know... but I had my dog neutered yesterday...

I found it strange that he still has ... (at the risk of being disgusting) the "sack" there...

Ive no idea what i thought they do i guess i thought they take the lot off? But i guess they just take the testicals out ? Eee

Well I say congrats on being a responsible pet owner. I don't think it's a silly question, and I don't see why people feel the need to criticise you for asking it.

Anyway, for dog desexing, they either remove the testicles via an incision in front of the scrotum or in the sac itself, but generally they'll just leave the sac behind.
Both my dogs were desexed as puppies about 5-6mths of age, and neither of them have their sacs anymore - in fact, i can't really even make out their scars anymore now that I look! So I guess as they grew the skin in that area just atrophied. I wouldn't know if it is the same in adult dogs though.

The usual method is to make a slit in the scrotum and remove the testicles...in giant breeds/older dogs some vets will do an ablation...which does remove the scrotum as well, but this isn't usually necassary since in due time it will shrink down on it's own.The younger and smaller the dog is at the time of neutering the quicker it will shrink.

In neutering a male, one incision is made about the "sack," and both testicles are removed through this incision. No, there is no need to remove the "sack" itself. The sack may swell with fluid, but this should go down within a week or so.

They go in through a small incision and remove the inner workings, the testicles and leave the sack. It takes awhile, but the sack does shrink back into place and in most cases is virtually non-existent. Don't worry they didn't do anything wrong.
When I started grooming, I wondered too. So working next to a vet, I asked.

They did the same to my puppy when I had him neutered...as far as I know they just remove the testicles, and sew the "sack" up. I'm told that eventually the fluid and fatty tissue in the "sack" will just absorb back into the dog's body and the "sack" will go away. If you're really concerned about it though, just call your vet and ask. He or she can give you a much better answer.

For a male; an incision is made into the scrotum and the parts are removed but the sack remains behind. For a female, they make a surgical incision into the abdomen and remove all the reproductive parts. Much worse for the female than the male. Hope this helps!!!

I did some work experience with vets as I was thinking of becoming a veterinary nurse and to answer your question yes they take out the testicles and leave the sack.....this really put me off doing this job in the end it was a bit much!

I just had my cat neutered and they just made a small slit in each sac and removed his testicals. His "slits" didn't even require stitches. They healed on their own. I know the sac is discusting looking but at least the main part of it is gone. No more producing for him. lol

I don't think this is a dumb question at all. Don't worry, that will eventually go away. We had a Basset who was "dragging" shall we say. After a few weeks it totally disappeared. Thank-you for neutering your dog.
