Does your passport is an old one or biometric passport (issued after 2004 --> Its a passport with a chip containing data of your fingerprint, eye scan, dental record etc)?

for biometric passport,
as long as the chip is not damaged it should be fine.

for older passport
Outside (cover) does not really matter, as long as the inside where you have your photograph and details readable, and you still have blank pages to put on stamps and visa labels.

otherwise get a new one if you are currently abroad.
Make sure your visa and arrival date stamp is readable (don't get yourself into trouble with local immigration authority)
Contact the consulate/embassy immediately.

I did 10 years of hard travelling with my passport and it was never a problem. As long as everyting is readable you are OK. If you aren't travelling for a month you might want to send it in for a new one just in case.
