She was playing in trees and a padock in the northern NSW, Australia area. It is approximately 2 - 3 centimetres in size and feels a bit sticky. It has little eyes and a mouth also.

that's a bloody big grub .... sounds a little too big to be a tick .. ( though i may be wrong ) .. There are parasites in other countries ( saw a doco once ) where a grub is laid beneath the skin on the scalp and basically lives there until it's ready to metamorphisize(sp sorry spelling part of brain taken a snooze) .. BUT i have never heard of it being here in AU ...

I would do as others have suggested .. bath it and get her to a doctor as soon as possible .. in case there is an infection or if the grub left toxins behind.. PLEASE TAKE the grub with you.
It may be nothing but is it worth the risk not to have it checked out?

Size? Shape? What was it made of? Where had the child been during the day? What part of the world do you live in?
A tick? Need more details? Is the child sick in any way? Fever, Itch?

Try google.

We probably need more info. What region do you live? How big was the grub? Could it have been a caterpillar? Can you provide more details?

~Since your childs head is red and swollen, I'm thinking it's a parasite. You would need to worry about infection. Clean the site well and apply antibiotics.
I've never been where you are, but it doesn't sound good.
Good luck.~
