Because Matt doesn't know what he is doing. I do believe he had a plan when he was first hired. That plan was to hire Mariucci, draft a QB, draft players in the skill positions to help him and build the defense through later round draft picks and free agency. The problem was that Mariucci failed, his talent scouts failed, and his plan went into the toilet. Now, he doesn't trust anyone in the organization to help advise him and he is probably beginning to doubt himself as far as drafting talent. I am sure Martz and Marinelli are not helping matters either. Martz probably wants to draft offense primarily being that he is an offensive guru, while Marinelli thinks they should draft defense since he is a defensive minded coach. The best thing for Millen to do this draft day is to look at this team objectionably and draft the best player on the board in terms of need.
I believe they should be serviceable at RB. They should go with Joe Thomas at OL in the first round. Then in the second or third, they could go after either Kolb out of Houston or Drew Stanton. I believe Trent Edwards might also be a good pick up for Martz. He went to Stanford so he has the intelligence to absorb Martz's offense. Then they need to get some help on the defense. Maybe a CB after trading away Dre' Bly.
One thing is for sure, Millen cannot afford to screw this one up.

The problem is he cant evealuate talent and will not listen to his coaches or scouts. Remember that Marty Morninhweg (the head coach when Harrington was selected) was so pissed that Millen took harrington he refused to go to the news conference introducing their new QB. Guess Morninhweg was right! The problem with picking a QB 1st round is you tie your hands for a minimum of 3 years afterward...you wouldnt dare pick another QB with a chance to develop or you look foolish (I know we are talking Millen but even his mother taught him not to intensionally make a fool of himself). They could have entered the Brees talks last year...another failure by the staff. They need to sit down with Marinelli and figure out what he needs to be successful...he is a defensive guy with no defense. If you hire someone play to their strength, after all you hired him because you believe what he has accomplished is what your goals are as well. The Lions have so many holes that they need to trade down, purge a few guys and rebuild pretty much from the ground up. They need to at least groom a capable QB (I hear allthe people who say Kitna is good....he led the league in interceptions....not a good thing with the defense they have). They need a lot of help at receiver and O-line (they did address the line during free agency...not a chance they take Thomas and pay top of the draft money to a lineman). I laugh when i hear about the running game, Jones is always hurt, Bell was a part timer in Denver and Duckett is at best a shortyardage bulldozer. They have a solid middle of the D-line, the ends cant get to the QB and are routinely zone blocked out of position. The linebacking is a sad joke...Sims was very good but the rest of the backers are barely special team worthy (in fact their starting ML, Paris Lenon wasnt good enough to keep on GBs special teams, not exactly loaded with LBs themselves but they cut him and now he starts for the Lions?). The DBs are getting a bit better but they need a lot of help as well, Bullocks looks like a keeper and kennedy will do fine in a true cover 2 scheme (Marinelli's defense of choice) Stanley Wilson could be a very good nickel back so there are a few peices there but much needs to be done.
And most important as to the QB question...know why they stayed out of the Brees sweepstakes....money! The Ford family has always been known to avoid paying big bonus' money and the cost of having a great team is something they arent willing to pay. Expect the Lions to draft Beck (BYU) in the 4th round and annoint him as the next Montana...a 26 year old undersized QB who cant throw a deep ball and is best suited for the west coast offense. Some things never change.

Joey Harrington was not the problem when he was in Detroit. The Lions orginization sucks. I think if Harrington gets a shot to play in Atlanta, he may surprise some people. It doesnt matter what QB goes the Lions they will never be a winner and they will all look like draft busts.

At that point Joey Harrington was one of "potential."
Make a mistake drafting a QB condemns you to 5 years of suckitude. A WR is only 1 year.:)

Was joey harrington the problem, or is there something else wrong with his philosophy. Whatever he has been doing isn't working overall. It's alot more than just that one player or position. Maybe Marinelli can fix it. WHo knows.
