With Or Without You

by U2

See the stone set in your eyes

See the thorn twist in your side

I wait for you

Sleight of hand and twist of fate

On a bed of nails she makes me wait

And I wait....without you

With or without you

With or without you

Through the storm we reach the shore

You give it all but I want more

And I'm waiting for you

With or without you

With or without you

I can't live

With or without you

And you give yourself away

And you give yourself away

And you give

And you give

And you give yourself away

My hands are tied

My body bruised, she's got me with

Nothing left to win

And nothing else to lose

With or without you

With or without you

I can't live

With or without you

I think it's about his relationship with God, using a relationship with a woman as an analogy. He wants to know everything now, but he knows that he has to wait, and to him it feels like a bed of nails.

He knows God gives himself away, and he knows what it says in the Bible, that one day we will know as we are known, but with Bonos' personality he wants to know right now, as a lot of us do, because God knows it all right now, but he can't live with or without God, and his faith. I mean wasn't Jesus stoned-stones thrown at him--Stones set in your eyes, and didn't Jesus have a thorn twisted in his side? And weren't Jesus' hands tied, after the nails were pounded in. And wasn't his body bruised when Jesus was up on the cross with nothing left to win, and nothing left to lose.

That is what I truly believe that's what the song is all about. Bono is known to use a lot of analogies in his songs when it comes to his faith.

God Bless, Robyn

The lyrics are about relationships, but can be interpreted many ways. They were written by Bono, who wanted to write a love song that dealt with real issues in relationships.
In 1987 Bono explained that everybody in the group knows what the line "And you give yourself away" means: "It's about how I feel in U2 at times - exposed. I'm not going to do many interviews this year. Because there's a cost to my personal life, and a cost to the group as well."

I've always thought of as Bono waiting for a love and the love he's waiting for is not ready. "See the stone set in your eyes" to me is like someone who is cold and doesn't want a relationship but he waits w/ or w/out you. "See the thorn twist in your side", (to me), is like having someone ask you something you don't want to answer. You kind of wiggle like someone poked you in your side, maybe suck on your teeth.

To me he's in love. She's not that in love. He sees that she is in love ("and you give yourself away"). And he waits. Good song.

this song is about temperamental love, a girl who makes him wait, finds fault with him as quickly as she is willing to live him
e.g (see the stone set in your eyes) and (on a bed of nails she makes me wait) So she quickly grows cross with him, and she leaves him hanging on a bed of nails, meaning he has to move and speak carefully with her least to upset her some more.
Yet through this all he tells us he loves her and will wait her her to return the love fully (with or without her he will wait for her love)

it's just a very back and forth relationship.

I love this song and play and sing it on my guitar all the time for my bf!

Not sure, but probably about a relationship break-up. I like U2 also.
