i was wondering what the difference is between wearing one of those dress shirts with the ridges as opposed to a regular white dress shirt with a tuxedo. is it ok to have either?

Coincidentally, those shirts are called "tuxedo shirts" and the ridges are called "tuxedo stitching." As far as do you HAVE to wear one, no. And, get this, a tux doesn't have to be black, white, or baby blue. The pants don't HAVE to be the same color as the jacket, either. Good luck trying to rent one that way but when you grow up and you have the money to buy your own tux you can do almost whatever you want with it. Just remember, the point is to look dressed up.

Tuxedo shirts look better when you are wearing tuxedo. If you wear a regular button down white shirt, it just does not look right.

Its all a matter of personal choice.
If you have the opportunity to mix and match certain styles based on what you personally like, then go for it.
Wearing the regular old white dress shirt is not going to make any kind of mark in any scene, if thats what you're aiming for then have at it.
