Um... me and my friends are making a movie, and in part of it the main character is running from the bad guys and we want to be able to make a small... explosion to make it look like the bad guys are shooting at him, but are missing and hitting the tree... How can we make something that will do that?

a prop gun. Check at shops or stores that sell props for movies.

At movie prop stores they should have those little fake blood baggies with their own detonators set to explode so you don't need to actually "hit" the person with the prop gun. If not, you could ask the shop clerk to give you some advice on rigging your own.

A starter's pistol is handy to have. It's cheap and legal.
