Kiwi are not extinct, they are however endangered. You may be thinking of the Dodo however, which has been extinct due to the direct actions of man since the mid to late 17th century.

RE:
how long have the kiwi birds been extinct?

Kiwi birds have been extinct in Northern and Southern America for about 11 generations now.
However, take a trip to Fiji and I'm sure you will find at LEAST twenty or so kiwi birds waddling around on the docks waiting to greet weary travelers.

Well, yoour wrong. They're not extinct. There flightless birds from New Zealand and Australia (that aread). You're thinking of the Dodo bird, who was another flightless bird. Kiwis aren't extinct, they have some at the San Diego zoo. I don't even think they're enddangered. They might be, though
