A craft is a handmade object that usually has function. Quilting and pottery are two examples of crafts. They can require all the skill and ability of fine art and to me, are beautiful in their "purposeful" nature. Anyone, regardless of their level of education, can understand and appreciate a handmade coffee cup!

Fine Arts are works that serve no distinct "function". It is true that fine arts record historical events and people, but as for day-to-day usefulness, fine art isn't. Fine Arts are a mystery because they fill a void in people's lives...a desire for beauty, imagination and expression. As far as I know, humans are the only living things that make "art".
