To put an immediate end to the war
The usa was facing the prospect of invading japan to subdue it. the last few battles; iwo jima and okinawa particularly, were incomprehensibly bloody. japan had no regard for its own citizen's lives and planned to turn their whole island into a fortress. Casualties were estimated to be 1 million americans and half a million british in the first invasion alone. some cynics say we used it to scare stalin as well, but the fact remains that they ignored an ultimatum on 7-27-45 after enduring the worst conventional bombs could do. A powerful argument remains that the Bomb saved allied and japanese lives.
The Allies demanded unconditional surrender of the Axis. In the Pacific Theatre, the Allies, led by the United States, rolled up the Japanese expansion island by island. When Guam was taken, the Allies had a base from which stage an invasion. The estimates of American casualties for an invasion of mainland Japan was in excess of 1 million Americans. Possibly in excess of 2 million Americans. The United States dropped two atomic bombs to save American lives and speed the end of the war. Prior to using the atomic bomb, Japan was given ultimatums to surrender along with warnings of the dire consequences. The Japanese government ignored the warnings. While the use of the atomic bomb was a technological and strategic turning point in both WWII and all future diplomatic and strategic activities, there were more people killed, maimed, and injured during the Tokyo firebombing campaigns than by the atomic bomb.
To force Japan to surrender without further fighting. Japan surrendered very quickly thus saving the lives of over 100,000 American soldiers and perhaps as many as 1,000,000 Japanese who would have died if we had invaded Japan.

IF your read the book "War without Mercy" by John Tower, you will see how there is was tremendous racism and bigotry toward the Japanese, viewed as a separate species even...there was one poll conducted where the majority of americans thought the japanese were genetically belligerent and I also believe a majority or significant minority thought only exterminating them was the answer...t
So the question arises, why the atom bomb against Japan and not Germany? part probably the incredible anti japanese racism...
That Japan probably would have surrendered without the bombing, is not seriously in doubt...their two allies had already been defeated and they were isolated ...all the regions surrounding them were embargoing them...there was the threat of joint US russian invasion, with british help of course.
I think the bombing was motivated by racism and also the fact that we didnt' want a joint invasion with the russians, because the russians would have wanted a share of the land (like they wanted a share of Germany and Europe in the aftermath of the war) Finally It was also a statement to the world and the soviet union that we are the new dominant power of the world
Revenge, treatment of GIs were probably of secondary concern. someone mentioned that the US chose two small cities (weird since both had populations over 100,000...not exactly small)...but this elides the obvious: the major cities had already been horrifically and criminally bombed with fire bombs that set the wooden cities on fire..."firebomb attacking the teeming bamboo ant heaps" in the words of General Chennault in 1940.

Historians are almost unanimous in their agreement that President Truman wanted to end the war quickly and preserve American lives.
There is another historical prespective that the US wanted the post-war world aware of its military capabliities. The US feared Stalin and felt that an atomic show of force would set up a post-war world in which the US had the upper hand.

2 reasons.
The first reason was to see if it would work after spending close to 2 billion dollars.
Second was to put a fast end to the war. Let Japan know that indeed, we do have a bomb that can take out what cities they still had standing.

Hi Friends!!!!!!!!!!!
As per given in the history books,it was only being the prior motive of America to be the powerful nation of this world which makes it to drop the atomic bomb on japan.
but,it was only the part of the war ,as when japan had attacked on pearl harbour and killed many of American as well as the British soldiers then both of them had decided to take revenge with japan and then they had dropped this bomb on America.Well acc.to sum of the historians it was a right step to do so,otherwise tit would not have possible to stop the WW 2.

To test the new weaponry in real-world conditions.
Two different types of bomb were used, an 'H' bomb and an 'A' bomb, so even the attempts of Japan's leaders to surrender after the first bomb was dropped were ignored to make sure the demonstration was complete.

Hey,
get Axis and Allies for free here: http://j.mp/1BDxztz
no surveys, no scams, just the full game!
You can pick to be either the Allied powers of Britain, Russia, and America, or instead opt to play as the Axis powers of Germany and Japan. Either way, this is a worldwide conflict where you'll have to learn to play strategically across two fronts, no matter who you’re playing as.
Give it a try.

We needed to end the war and they were refusing to give up. Also they had pretty much deserved it because they treated our POWs pretty badly and they led death marches with are POWs. It was justified because we were going to save more troops an we were just tired of fighting.
US used the atomic bombs on small cities because they didnt want to kill a lot of people because of course they were innocent, but something had to be done. They kind of deserved it because they attacked us out of the blue.
