It seems when I press the brakes on my car I now hear a loud noise that almost sounds like thunder, I'm wondering if this is the brakes or what? The car still stops when I press the brake but not as easily as other cars I've driven without this noise.

Sounds like your brakes are gone and either your drums or rotors are being scratched, that's what happens when it's metal to metal, have them check immediately before you damaged them any further, they might have to be replaced if scratched too deep by the metal part of the brakes

Don't play with your brakes get it to the shop and get them fixed. There is a problem now and if you delay, it could wind up costing you a bunch more to get fixed. The pads are gone and you may be digging into the rotors now. Even worse than the money, could be the chance to have an accident and hurt someone.

Get your brakes checked. If you're lucky, it is nothing. However, your brakes may be really messed up and it could be tearing up your rotors. Replacing brakepads can cost you $50-$100. Replacing rotors could cost you $100 per rotor or more.

ANY sound you hear is being caused by friction. Friction in a car is bad. Get checked!

You need brakes! Your rotors need turning if not replaced if you've waited too long!

sounds like your pads are worn enough to allow the squeeler to engage making the noise to let you know it is time to replace your pads very soon.
