you move your foot and accidently knock all 4 wheel nuts down a deep drain gully. You try to open up the gully cover but its too hard to move.

So now your left at your car at night, far from home, no mobile/cell phone.... with the punctured tyre you've just removed.. and the spare you've put on... but no tyre nuts to secure the wheel.

What would you do ?

Personally, I'd just walk to the nearest town or service station. If it was me, I would have a map of the area in car, so I'd know which direction I'd need to go. I'd take the map along with anything else I might need, like a torch, my wallet and probably a bottle of water if it's going to be a long walk (also my cigarettes and lighter, but that's just me, lol).

Having said that, if the nearest place to get help was too far to walk I might consider sleeping in the car. It would depend on how urgently I needed to get to my destination and also whether there would be any traffic during the day. So if I didn't think anyone would come past in the morning or if I just needed to get to wherever it is that I'm going, then I'd probably just walk it anyway.

Either way, as soon as I finally got home with my car, I'd make sure I put a spare set of wheel nuts in the tool box in the boot of my car, lol.

Lock yourself in the car until daylight. Be sure to keep a weapon nearby, just in case. If you're lucky, a state cop will pass by, see the windows steamed up, and stop to help. If you're not lucky, you'll be there all night, and some fool might try to break in. Not that daylight will help much in the wrong area, but at least you can get your bearings and see any threats. Consider it "camping." People act like that's so terrible.

Your question though, is what would *I* do. I would use my cell phone that I keep in the glove box for emergencies and call for 'roadside assistance' which is standard with my new car for 5 years. In the meantime I would use my emergency kit in the trunk with a blanket and stupid messages that I can put in the windows. And last but not least, I carry a firearm so.

If you "take 1 nut off of the other wheels and put it onto that one" you're setting yourself up for some serious danger. There's a reason why each wheel has all of those nuts. If 4 was enough, they wouldn't use 5. If 3 was enough, they wouldn't use 4. It's hard for me to believe how many rednecks think that is an acceptable solution. The torque put onto the wheels, plus the odd vibration created from an unsecured wheel could easily lead to a serious accident. It's the difference between a few lost nuts, and a completely lost car. 1 night of camping out won't kill you. Losing a wheel at 45mph could.

I'm sorry to say, but that's just a stupid situation to be in and it's completely avoidable. The nuts should have went into pockets. Even when I put air in my tires, I put the caps into my pockets until I'm done. Putting them anywhere else is a recipe for disaster. You're doing something that you hardly ever do. You have no pattern. Of course you don't remember where you put them, and of course you stepped on them or knocked them over or forgot where you put them. If someone is too incompetant to change a tire, they should have AAA or roadside assitance.

hehe, i'd probably just stay in the car until a) the police came or b) daylight came.

Just an observation, but almost all of the people that have said 'take a nut off each of the other 3 wheels' are guys. huh!

oh well, i'm never gonna be good with cars so i hope i'm never gonna be in that position, x

Take one lug nut off each of the other wheels and put them one the spare tire. Then proceed with caution to the next service station or auto parts store.

so you know about taking a nut off the other wheels! Depending on how lazy you are you can drive a long way on a flat tyre, even when the tyre disintegrates you'll be surprised how far you can go.

LOL I don't even change my own tires when they're punctured but I would call my road service company for your use.
