That's going to be a bit tough without knowing the details of each system that you will plug the drive into. Those destination workstations could already have drives assigned to z: including some that will be tough to move off, like the CD or DVD drive(s), or maybe a disk partition.

In most Windows installations (2000, XP, Vista) you have to tell each individual system how to treat the inserted USB device. You can assign a static, consistent drive letter by using the disk management interface and the "change drive letter" option. However, this would need to be done individually on each system.

A reg hack is feasible, but in some cases you would need to reboot the target system in order for the new drive letter assignment to take place, especially if there was already something sitting on that drive letter.

I think the batch commandline option in your other question is a better way to go.

specific they are going to be risk-free. An "exterior" power isn't something greater advantageous than an inner one interior of a case or "enclosure". Many tech-savvy persons make exterior drives themselves, by procuring enclosures and confusing drives separately. the only clarification why the lifestyles of an externalchronic could be decrease is that in case you delivery it around plenty and subject it to significant quantities of marvel/vibration (fairly while it is on). That pronounced, maximum retail drives contain a guaranty of three years (some purely a million) so which you is frequently waiting to replace thechronic if it fails (continually lower back up the records concept, for the reason that's costly to get well).

Right click My Computer. Click Manage. Select "Storage"

Then click "Disk Management" and select the harddrive/removable drive you want the letter to change. Then right click and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths.

Goodluck!!!
