When it starts to chatter, slip or simply doesn't release properly I would imagine that it's time to replace the clutch. I am assuming you already have adjusted the clutch and the problem remains?

How easy a clutch is to push is determined by the pressure plate. They will get weak over time and are replaced the same time as the clutch. You didn't give the year of your Celica so I'm going to assume it is a later year model with a hydraulic clutch. Under the hood, next to the brake master cylinder on the fire wall is the clutch master cylinder. Make sure there is plenty of fluid being supplied to it and examine it for leaks. Trace the fluid line from the master cylinder to the transmission. Here you will find the slave cylinder, examine it for leaks as well. If all this is OK and the transmission tends to grind when shifting or the rpms of the engine increase without the speed increasing (slippage) then its time for a clutch. Most clutch jobs run around 350 to 450 dollars US. This should include new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing and flywheel resurfacing.

Your clutch will start slipping, like when you mash the gas and the motor speeds up but your car doesn't. Your problem might be with the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder.

it sounds like either

a. your clutch needs adjusting
b. you have hot-rodded it too much and the synchronizers are not working properly.

just two guesses from the top of my head... from the easy to push, I would say A.

clutches wear out but the way you drive makesa huge difference in how long they last.grinding is not getting your gears in sync. when your clutch starts slipping youll notice it driving as you do

bad shifting may also be your throwout rod..

But.. when you accellerate the engine but the wheels do not speed up at the same rate.. or worse.. the engine revs in gear but the car does not move..

THATS when you know the clutch is gone.

the 1st warning, this is going to start up slipping. driving the snatch potential your resting your foot on the snatch continuously. what ruins the snatch? nicely, driving with your foot on the snatch, letting it carry your motor vehicle on a hill, leaping the snatch can roughen it, if the rear substantial seal starts to leak oil, the oil can get on the snatch and ruin it.
