I don't know why everyone is citing burlesque...20 years ago was 1987.
Strippers made more money (possible to make 3k a night), stage shows were emphasized, and strip clubs were more selective about who they employed. Today, 1k is *hard* to make, almost anyone can become a stripper, and stage shows are not nearly as important as lap dances. I don't know about respect but the quality has definitely changed.

Not for their stripping.
I've made an extensive study of this...(1)
With honourable exceptions in the neo-burlesque movement, best known perhaps through Catherine D'lish and Dita Von Teese, the apotheosis of striptease with the emphasis on *tease* was in the fifties and early sixties.
No matter how bare or how intimate, the loss of "tease"from "strip" has been a retrograde step.
(1) I haven't, but it was such a tempting thing to write.

No i dont think so. Accepted maybe, but not respected. 20 yrs ago burlesque was an art, featured in dinner clubs....today its just a legal way to make money and most of the ones i know wouldn't be able to differentiate sex from a table dance!

No. Probably just paid better, I forgot to add that strippers have never been respected as a profession.

No..
20 years ago they Stripped.. and not even beyond pasties and a 'g' string sometimes.
Today, lets just say that strippers are far more personal.

20 years is no time at all. I'd say no.....unhappily. At least not in the United States which is such a puritan nation anyway.

respected, no. richer, yes. strippers could care less if they are respected. they come to work, grind on pathetic losers that can't get a real date, take their money and go home and sleep.
