A second edition implies that the author has carried out some amendments to the original edition. Quite often the book, if non fiction, will carry a second edition preface saying exactly what alterations, amendments, additions etc., have been been made. A second impression or second reprint means that the book has been far more popular than the publishers had initially allowed for and they have had to print more copies, but without making any alterations.
