my dad always said that if my engine runs hot, before you change the water pump, or flush the radiator, or anything like that, check the thermostat. (basically, he wanted me to start on the cheapest part and work up)

it could be several things. first, if it was the water pump. the car would heat up so fast, you wouldn't get a mile. second, it could be a thermmostat going bad, third, the water could be dirty or low on anti-freeze. the water should be a light green shade to match the anti-freeze color. if the radiator needs to be cleaned, it'll have a good deal of build-up in the radiator. pull the cap, and look at the inside openings. are they clogged? if so, get the radiator cleaned. if the thermostat is going bad, she will start to overheat whenever you are stopped such as at a light, or just sitting with the engine running. if that's the case, change out the thermostat. it's on th etop side of the engine and has a large hose connected to a housing. remove the hose, thenb re,move the two, or three, bolts holding it down and pul out the old stat and install a new one of the same rating, being sure to put the thing in the same way the old one came out. tighten the bolts, afyter putting trhe papaer gasket in place. be careful not to get it too tight as it will crack the housing. add a gallon of anti-freeze and fill with water. check to be sure water is full once it has warmed up becuase it may pull most of the water into the engine and will require more in the radiator to be full. if you need help, ask someone.

a bad water pump will be signified by one of three things.
1) a mysterious coolant leak shows that the bushings have worn out
2) the pump housing itself wears out, generally a leak and a squeal (not very common)
3) pump actually seizes inside the pump housing leaving you with a fried belt and frustration. (also not very common)
i am not sure why the charging voltage would be directly effected by the heat though, unless the alternator is overheating also.

There could be so many things which could be causing the engine to heat up, following are some of them:

radiator/ac fan not working properly
radiator is chocked
leak in the water body
