It stands to reason that it would be a 3 point shot, because players regularly shoot jump shots starting from behind the 3 point line, moving forward through the air before releasing the ball and coming down in front of the line. The only criterion seems to be that both feet leave the ground behind the line before the ball is released. The only thing that could make the dunk a 2 pointer is if there is some rule that the ball has to actually leave the player's hands before entering the hoop. Your thoughts on this question?

The only thing that could make the dunk a 2 pointer is if there is some rule that the ball has to actually leave the player's hands before entering the hoop.

I think this is the key, although he jump from othside the 3 pt line but his hands touches the rim. The rim is where he last touches, which is inside the 3pt arc, thus a 2pt field goal, if superman would just do a floater or finger-roll then it is a 3pt field goal.

I don't think you can say for sure because it has never happened in a game.

The rules indicate that it would count for 3 points because he was standing behind the 3 point line when he jumped but they do not specifically say that a dunk still counts as 3.

See Rule no. 5 section I part c:

"A successful field goal attempt from the area outside the three-point field goal line shall count three points.

(1) The shooter must have at least one foot on the floor outside the three-point field goal line prior to the attempt.

(2) The shooter may not be touching the floor on or inside the three-point field goal line.

(3) The shooter may contact the three-point field goal line, or land in the two-point field goal area, after the ball is released."

Some answerers are saying that he is not allowed to touch the rim. This is incorrect, the rules do not mention touching the rim, only touching the floor.

I think the main issue is part 1 of the rules. If he is flying to the hoop can you say that he had his foot on the floor outside the 3 point line prior to the attempt because he does not attempt to shoot until he is right in front of the hoop.

There is a rule that says the officials can decide about anything that is not specifically covered under the rules. (see Rule no. 2 section III)

So it is possible that if it did happen in a game it would be deemed to only count for 2 points.

If he dunked it, no. It would count as two. The ball has to be released from his hand from the 3 point line to count as a 3. So if he took off from the 3 point line and then finger rolled it in then it would count as a 3.

Its based on where you jump and the corresponding point value to it. IIRC, Wilt Chamberlain dunks free throw shots (w/o a running start, mind you) before it was banned but since theyre free throws theyre only worth one point.
