I had to look up the word, never having heard it before but it sounded Rrom to me. I was right.

"The accepted etymology for "chav" is that it derives from the Romani word "chavi", meaning a child.[4] Related words derived from the same source include "charva" (used in northern England in a similar sense) and perhaps the obsolescent "young shaver" (meaning a boy). In modern Spanish "chaval" means "lad".[5].

I read the whole bit on a few sites and I can truly say, nothing about me is chav. The only gold I wear are two small bands from my Rrom husbands. Don't fit in with that culture at all. Must be an age thing LOL. And a good taste thing.

The term sounds fairly racist though. "That don't impress me much" to quote Shania.

Nothing.

I am not a criminal, I avoid a fight, I do not like "bling" (the sum total of my normal jewelry is a thin silver chain around my neck), I am a jeans and t'shirt sort of guy, I cannot stand rap or violent music, and I am soft and precisely spoken. I would rather be shot than wear a track suit or burberry cap, thankyou. I also use proper English.

----edit

I have to second Barbara... it is a "good taste" thing.

It is also annoying that they HAD to use the word "chavi". That really annoys me. I do not like negative use of a perfectly good Romani word. Chavi has NO negative connotations.

Big dangly earrings-which are probably really bad taste- but have somehow become part of who I am !! But not content with just one pair- Oh no- I have 4 piercings in one ear and 3 in the other and usually wear two sets of dangly ones and the rest studs. Chavvy? I suppose so- but hayho- it's me.

>>Chav or Charv/Charver ('ch' pronunced as in chair) is a mainly derogatory slang term in the United Kingdom for a subcultural stereotype fixated on fashions such as gold jewellery and 'designer' clothing.
