I live in japan. Its not so much your skin colour or anything, at first Japanese people are cautious of anyone who ISNT Japanese. You need to let them judge you for who you are (personality wise etc) not by your looks. If you are fun and out going it should be no problem, but if you are a noisy bad attitide forigner, you will only solidify the assumptions they have of your race.

I am a Japanese woman...I live in the States right now (and have been for years) but I do know that we are very friendly and hospitable towards "foreigners" as long as you're cool and not cocky about things.
Be yourself and you'll be just fine. People are people no matter where you go (I've traveled a lot to different countries), some places are just friendlier than others and some are just territorial and not so open to other race. Japan is definitely one of the friendlier place, generally speaking.
BTW, have fun...enjoy yourself. You are sooo lucky to be going to Japan. I miss it sooo much. I am planning on going back maybe at the end of the year or the beginning of the next.

Sorry, Carl was / is right. There's been problems with black American servicemen in certain areas of Japan. A few rapes and beatings. The most well known was that of a 12 year old girl being molested. Unless you speak Japanese, it would be very hard to mingle with anyone there. Japanese can be a very shy people.

Depends. Some might be. Others have a thing for black guys. Lots of Africans in Japan tell the Japanese they are American because the Japanese can't tell the difference. Just play it by ear and I'm sure you will have a good time. People have their stereotypes in Japan, but that's everywhere, not just Japan.

There's been some hype here due to an article in the media which was aimed against bad behaviour by foreigners in Japan. However, generally people are too polite to show any adverse feelings.
Just prove to them that all foreigners aren't the same!

this variety of answer you get will reflect the place individuals are posting from. in case you reside in a cosmopolitan city like Rio de Janeiro or London, you will see ethnic blending. In Alabama, you will no longer see it take place that lots. In my journey its unusual to work out a Black lady with a White guy.

You won't be the first Black American in Japan by any means. I know quite a few Japanese women who married Black GI's so just be yourself and get acquainted. Like any place else, some will treat you civilly and some won't no matter what the tone of your skin. Good luck and enjoy your stay, it's a really beautiful country.

Japan, as every nation in the world, varies from person to person. There are people with prejudices as well as very open minded ones. If you go to the province, it is more likely to meet people from the first category, though.
Anyway, I would like to remind you, that Japanese population is not entirely or predominantly female. I'm absolutely sure you'll find wonderful friends not only among women, but among men too.

Are you kidding?! No way! But remember THIS- You're representing the Brothers from your HOME Country- so you'll WANT to make a GOOD impression. The one thing the Japanese DON'T like- is loud mouthed Americans who cop an attitude! Be cool, show some manners and respect- & you'll have it "made-in-the-shade..." :)
