There is no one thing that works. Actually, there are several in varied order of importance. Each, equally necessary, is as follows: Realizing that you must respect each other as individuals at all times without any desire to try to control the other person. Loving kind words as well as constant "thank yous" and "pleases." Doing all you can to fill the times when the other one is working and you are not. Looking your best when your mate comes home. Number one for me was always being very excited to see my spouse whenever we have been apart. "Ask" instead of "Tell" go a long way as well as being the very best friend and support base your mate could ever dream of. Never any issues with trusting that your spouse loves you. You just know and never worry! Realizing that you love your spouse just as much as always and he still makes your heart beat excitedly just like your early years. A great marriage is easy sailing with very little rough water. Putting each other first ahead of your own self.

There is not one thing that will lead to a happy marriage. Just search for "secrets to a happy marriage" in google and you will find tons of sites claiming to have the "7 secrets to a happy marriage," "10 secrets to a happy marriage," "19 secrets to a happy marriage," etc. In general, they have similar themes: communication (such as talking before getting married about important issues like finances, children, etc, letting your partner know in a mature way if they have done something to upset you, listening to your partner's concerns, fighting fair, agreeing to disagree sometimes), compromise, variety, spending time alone with each other, committment, trust, giving compliments to each other, and being fair about splitting the housework. Basically just be mature and considerate and don't be afraid to use marriage counseling.

Honesty, compatibility, love, trust, healing from past issues,
the man protecting his wife, the wife tending to her man and supporting him and him to her, faithfulness, security, finances,
the wife and man being good spouses to each other and taking care of each other and themselves, helping each other, being kind, considerate, compassionate, passionate, tenderness, forgiveness, admitting to having problems and seeking help Together. No abusing, lying, and cheating.
This list can go on...

And most of all a miracle from God with the way the divorce rate, even in the religious places, is today.

everyone would probably say something like trust or honesty which i agree you should have but to me sex or communication would be my answer for this.(which sex is a form of communication)
