Great question, its a toughie.
I love both. Neither of them were vituoso but the later Mott line up had Ariel Bender (and Mick Ralphs come to think of it) in it and he could play so that balances things up.
Echo wrote better songs, Mott mostly played boogie blues so I would say they had less talent.
Did you know Ian Hunter (of Mott the Hoople) has a new album out, and you thought he was dead.

I have to agree with Mac Ray - I actually really like Echo & the Bunnymen! "The Killing Moon" is a GREAT song and they had a few other 80's alternative hits. I always like when I hear them on Sirius!
On the other hand, did Mott the Hoople have any other songs than "All the Young Dudes"?

Echo without a doubt is the best of the two (don't really know which has less talent). "The Killing Moon" at the beginning of "Donnie Darko" is great. Some of the best contemporary bands, including British Sea Power and Arcade Fire have lots of Echo in them.
