Well, I just want to tell you what a great person you are for asking this question. It really shows how much you care! (Which IS NOT a bad thing!) I wish I had a friend that cared about me that much! What you should do is talk to them about what is making them feel this way. Once they realize how much you care they will be sure to open up to you and feel much better. Just be there for them and all will turn out well as long as they trust you and you respect them. But be careful not to intervene too much--just listen to what they have to say, don't give them your opinion unless they want it. Best of luck!

You can not really stop a friend that is mentally depressed... but if u just mean literally, he/she feels sad and overwhelmed... show some kind of support... hug to show ur affection, and that u care how they feel, try to talk to them..
in some cases asking the typical question "What's wrong?!!" might not be the best choice..it only makes the person feel worse...sometimes talking about a experience related to the problem might help...in times is best just to hear them out...just be how u usually are with them... if u know that a joke is ok for the situation try to make them feel better by putting a smile in their face..that is the biggest satisfaction u can get knowing that u can make a single moment where they don't feel so sad.

I'd do my best to get my friend out to a movie or dressed up and out for pizza and fun. That failing, I'd ask if an overnight at her sisters or girlfriends house would lighten her mood. Ice cream can help and listening very well to her help most. A back rub or foot rub with lotion is another perk up for me. If this gal needs to go to a clinic to see dr. take her! they have some soothing meds but they take a week to start helping.

If they are really clinically depressed, you can't. Tell them you are worried about them and that they should go to a psychologist.
