Nirvana is most definitely one of the top 5 bands of all time. They are one of the few bands that changed the way we listen to music. People would have heard of the other Seattle bands, both Alice in Chains and Soundgarden had careers on the up and up at that point, and Pearl Jam's "Ten" had just come out only a month before "Nevermind", and many of those bands had darker, deeply introspective music and lyrics but it was Nirvana who made it ok to listen to it. After that all bets were off. Bands like Green Day and the Offspring could have a wide mainstream audience. Not to say that either of those bands wouldn't have made it without Nirvana, but they'd only reach the level of a Sonic Youth (Who are also awesome). Nirvana inspired people to go and carve out their own personal niche in music. The early 90's were so exciting because there was a network of people trying to discover new music granted, none of it was as good as Nirvana's but there were plenty of bands and styles out there that were so much more that what MTV was playing. (Before anyone says anything, I am very aware that most people, myself included, were exposed to Nirvana via MTV) We felt compelled to look further.

Definately in the top ten.
Reason for is Nirvana is timeless and extremely profound music.
Reason against, Kurt took the chumps way out.

Absolutely not. Nirvana may have had a big impact on music, but I'd be willing to bet that they would have been nearly forgotten if Kurt Cobain hadn't died. And the impact they did have was negative. What real talent did Cobain really posess? He played nothing I can't play, and I'm not even a guitarist.

No because they really didn't do anything special. Plus in all of the songs I have heard for the most part you can't understand 1/2 of the lyrics.

No, they are not even close. They were influential but their body of work was way to small and the movement they influenced was way too short.
