Hello
I'm learning new things here until recently I did'ent know the difference between transgendered and transexual; ( & I'm gay I know that's sad but that's what this forum is for to inform). Having said that I do know the difference between tv's (still blokes) and girls crying out to have their own body. So please accept my apology if you feel offended or insulted. I cannot answer your question about this difference between the U.S and the U.K.
Happy day.

Do they? In the UK, transgendered means transsexual, not transvestite - a TV isn't by any means necessarily trying to be the opposite sex, they're just role-playing by choice, whereas transsexuals have been born the wrong sex through no choice of their own. I used to work in a Transgender Clinic (in the UK) and we would never have assumed the title to be in any way related to TVs.

In the United States, people have asked to be referred to as Transgendered. They were XX and now they are XY or they were XY and now are XX. They do not want to be thought of as withholding any information about their lives, they don't have a problem with people knowing about their transformation. They are so happy and they want people to know, they don't want to keep anything like that a secret anymore.

I get the TV seperation, but TS's too? I guess we just try to include everyone, it's the GLBT thing... Whatever, I always say I'll call you what you want to be called as long as you let me know!

I live in the UK, and I can't say it insults me. But then again it is not something that has really touched my life in any way- prehaps I would feel differently if it had.

Um, only you folks in the UK think we lump them together. You're very mistaken indeed. Transgendered are just that...transgendered. Transvestites are completely different.
Don't tell me the ignorant in the UK don't lump people together as well. You're not so perfect there anymore than we are.
You have your quirks, we have ours.
Why do you people call your cigarettes "f*ags?" That's insulting to the American GLBT community.
See how things change once they cross the Atlantic?
You call them Crips, we call them chips
You call them chips, we call them fries.
You call it a Loo, we call it a restroom.
You call it a Lift, we call it an elevator.
You call it a lorry, we call it a truck.
You call it "Anti-clockwise," we call it "counter clockwise."
You call it a biscuit, we call it a cookie.
You call it a caravan, we call it a camper.
Do you see where this is going?

It's a cultural and linguistic difference. That's why. What offends us may not offend you, and vice versa. Just a difference.
