It's important to listen to and respect your parents, but it's also ok to ask questions. Calmly ask them to please explain why they won't allow you to have an aquarium. Know that you probably will not change their minds by arguing, so just listen. Then try to figure out a solution. For example, if they say they don't think you are mature enough to care for the fish, ask them how you could prove yourself mature enough. Maybe suggest that you could keep your room perfectly clean for a month and also help with the dishes after meals without being asked. Then do it. After that time sit down with them again and ask them politely to reconsider their decision about the fish. As a parent, this would go a long way in my eyes. Fussing, fighting, stomping off, crying etc never works, proving that their concerns can be over come does. If money is the issue, try to think of ways you personally could help save money around the house or even earn some for yourself. Maybe a local shop owner would trade you some time cleaning aquariums for some store credit. Also, look closely at ways to save money on setting up an aquarium. Things like buying used equipment.
Bottom line, they are your parents and have the final say so be mature and accept their decision until things can change.
All the best to you and I hope it all works out.

To convince your parents to get you a fish you need... To show them you can be responsible - As when you get your fish, you should have done ALL the research about it, and when you get your fish, your parents (sometimes) don't want to have anything to do with it, so you need to show them your responsible to take care of it yourself. Taking care of a fish, or any pet, is about responsibility. If they say no, you could go on the internet and show them beautiful fish tanks people have from youtube and convince them like that. Say like "Look at that, it's " Get my point. Make sure whatever you get as a beginner, it doesn't cost too much. Hope you get your fish! -AirAla-

Tell them that owning a pet has been proved to help relieve stress. Think of how nice it would be for them to come home and stare at an aquarium with all the fish swimming around. Plus, you don't have vet bills to worry about with fish or lot of clean-up in the yard. The best part of all they are great for people that have dog/cat allergies. Good luck convincing them.

the best way is to prove to them that you're serious about wanting fish and that you're responsible enough to handle taking care of them.
first, do research. a lot. find out what kind of fish you want, what size tank it needs, what water temp it needs, what it eats, compatible tank mates if you want any. find out everything you would need to know about keeping it and more. find some way to present it to your parents, I used to do power point presentations.
then, after you've shown them that you're serious about wanting fish, make a deal with them. my room was always messy, so I always used that one. I'd tell my parents I'd clean my room and keep it clean for a month, and at the end of that month if my room was still clean I had proved I was responsible enough to handle what I wanted. showing your parents that you're willing to work for something almost always does the trick. if your room isn't messy you could do extra chores or something.
suggest while the month (or however long you guys decide) deal/proving period is going on that you get the tank set up and cycled, which will show them even more how serious you are, that you're willing to wait for the tank to be ready for fish instead of jumping into the idea and throwing fish in a tank. to learn more aobut cycling see here:

your parents probably are afraid after you find out keeping fish involves work that you'll give up and they'll end up having to take care of them. and there is work involved in maintaining a fish tank, so don't buy fish and expect it to just be watching them swim, be prepared for treating sick fish, partial water changes, water testing, feeding schedules, ect.
good luck!

well - tell them to read this coz i am a trained pet owner.
fish are the easiest animals to care for. depending on what breed they are, goldfish are the easiest coz they dont require any temperature... and they can live in the coldest waters. get a filter, and you wont never have to clean out the tank. also, siamese fighting fish are easier than the goldfish as they can live in dirty stagnant water and dont require as much food. you dont have to train the fish to do anything, and they will soon like you as they have a memory of 1 year. the best thing about fish is that you can also accesorize the tank by buying plants and ornaments.

You also said you wanted to become a vegan ..keeping fish is not a vegan thing to do .. I think you are very confused and need to really consider what you are saying and asking others .. people are here to help but we need honest give and take .. think this over please ..

If you are as impatient as your question indicates, keeping an aquarium is probably not for you. If you're still keen, do some research on the subject and take it from there. Good luck.

It's hard to argue kylies points, well said and sensible.
I might have said to my parents (except they thought it would be good for me) 'ok then, I'll just spend my money on drugs'. But I think Kylie has it better.

Want my advice? Listen to your parents. They may or may not be smarter than you, but they have wisdom, that only comes with age and experience.
